GENEVA, N.Y. (November 27, 2012) – The Women's Basketball team lost 79-74 to William Smith College in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic this evening.
The Redhawks, who trailed most of the game, were unable to stop the Herons potent offense. Leading the way William Smith was Chloe Hayter, who scored a game-high 25 points after going 9 of 19 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
William Smith was sharp behind the three-point line with going 9 of 28 in the game which made for a solid .391 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.
Roberts Wesleyan battled hard in the second half after trailing the home team 30-28 at halftime, keeping things close the rest of the way. Senior
Sarah Alwardt gave the Redhawks their only lead of the second half after she scored on a layup with 13:07 left on the clock.
The Herons would then re-take the lead for good when Lauren Brustein hit a jump shot at the 12:30 mark, making the score 48-46 in favor of William Smith.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by senior forward
Brittany Williams, who scored a team-high 17 points after connecting on 8 of 15 shots from the field. Williams also grabbed five rebounds for the Redhawks.
Samantha Courtney posted 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds in addition to her four blocks in the game. Sophomore
Carneisha Henry added 13 points, a team-best eight boards, and three blocks.
As a team, the Redhawks struggled from long range, going 4 of 28 from beyond the arc.
With the loss, the Redhawks fall to 3-2 and will face Nazareth College in a consolation game on Thursday at 8pm. The game will be held at SUNY Geneseo.
