ROCHESTER, N.Y. (December 11, 2012) – The Men's Basketball team fell to Daemen College this evening, 73-67, in a close non-conference affair.
The Redhawks, who were coming off their East Coast Conference opener on Saturday, were led by
Devin Grimes. The senior swingman posted his sixth double-double of the season after scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Mike Stone scored a game-high 17 points while
Patrick Downer and
Tyrel Dixon each added 11 points.
Early on, the Redhawks took control of the game, going in a 16-9 run midway through the first half until the visitors responded in dominating fashion over the final five minutes. Daemen went on a 17-2 run to close out the half, sending the teams into the locker rooms with a 37-26 lead.
Coming out of the break, Roberts Wesleyan closed the gap, going on a 13-4 run, tying the score at 41 with 15:11 left on the clock.
After trading baskets for most of the second half, the Wildcats put the game away when Mark Coppola hit a jump shot with :51 seconds remaining to make the score 70-64 in favor of Daemen.
Down the stretch, the Widlcats were able to hit their free throws after the Redhawks were forced to foul to save what times was left on the clock.
Grimes shot the ball well in the game, shooting 63.6% from the floor, making 7 of his 11 shots. However, as a team , Roberts Wesleyan only shot 45.2% from the field which was slightly better than Daemen 45% field goal percentage.
The Redhawks had the edge from three point range, shooting 37.5% compared to the Wildcats 28.6%.
From the stripe, the visitors were better by making 15 of 23 attempts, going 65.2% on the night. The Redhawks shot just 55.6% from the line.
The loss drops Roberts Wesleyan to 4-5 on the season as they have now lost four straight to their Thruway rivals.
The team is back in action this Saturday when they travel to take on the University of the District of Columbia for a 1pm game.
