WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 15, 2012) – The visiting Women's Basketball team narrowly fell to the University of the District of Columbia this afternoon, 59-56, in East Coast Conference action.
The Redhawks, who fell behind 9-1 early on, were forced to play from behind for most of the game.
With 11 seconds left on the clock,
Samantha Courtney made a layup to cut the Firdebirds lead to just two. After being forced to foul to save time, UDC's Janelle Junior went 1 for 2 from the line to make it a three-point game.
With the final possession, however, the Redhawks were unable to get a good look from long range in an attempt to tie the game.
Senior
Sarah Alwardt scored a team-high 10 points after going 4 of 6 from the field and 2 for 2 from the charity stripe.
Marissa Sell finished with 14 rebounds and 8 points as she was a flawless 4 of 4 at the line. Fellow forward
Brittany Williams had nine points in the game for Roberts Wesleyan.
Turnovers hurt the Redhawks, giving the ball away 20 times compared to just 12 by the Firebirds. Off of the turnovers, UDC scored 19 points while Roberts Wesleyan scored 15 off of UDC's miscues.
The loss puts the Redhawks are 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in ECC action.
The team is off throughout the rest of the month and will hit the road for a game against the University of Bridgeport on Jan. 3.
