AMHERST, N.Y. (February 21, 2012) – The Women's Basketball team fell to the Daemen College Wildcats 49-41 in the American Mideast Conference Tournament semi-finals this evening.
The Wildcats advance to the AMC Tournament final, facing the winner of the #1 Point Park/#4 Houghton semi-final on Saturday.
The Raiders largest lead of the first half came when
Sarah Child made hit her shot from under the basket with under 10 minutes to go, making it a 10-6 ball game.
The Wildcats answered quickly, going on a 7-0 run to make it 13-10 after Courtney Donovan drained a three at the 7:59 mark.
Neither team would score until
Sarah Alwardt hit a lay-up for the Raiders, making it a 13-12 Daemen lead with three minutes left in half. The Raiders couldn't hold the lead in the waning moments of the half, heading into the locker room trailing, 17-16.
In the second half, both teams played a scrappy defensive game as the Wildcats held a slim 29-25 lead with 10:00 left on the clock.
With 6:45 remaining, Child would cut the deficit to one making it a 32-31 Daemen lead after hitting a jump shot.
The Wildcats would hold their lead the rest of the way, out-scoring the Raiders 17-10 in the final minutes of the game.
Bianca Jones led the Raiders with a game and season high 20 points after going 7 of 15 from the field and 3 of 7 from long range. Jones earned a double-double after hauling in 17 rebounds for the visitors. The senior also led the team with 3 blocks in the game.
As a team, the Raiders shot 25.9% from the field, while the Wildcats shot slightly better at 30%.
Daemen out-rebounded the Raiders 50 to 45, winning the defensive battle 36 to 31.
The Wildcats had three score in double figures with Ellie Allen and Courtney Donovan each scoring 13 points for Daemen.
With the loss, the Raiders are now 20-10 overall.
The Raiders are still alive in the NCCAA East Region as the team sits in second place in the regional standings behind Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Details on the East Region tournament will be finalized later this week.
