ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 27, 2011) - The Men's Lacrosse team battled the visiting Alfred University Saxons this evening in the program's inaugural game. The Raiders lost 12-9, but gave a solid effort in the first-ever Roberts Wesleyan men's lacrosse game.
The Raiders first goal came at the 12:24 mark in the first period from attackman
Colin Cornaire to give the home team the lead. The Saxons would score four straight until the Raiders would respond with a
David Smith goal near the start of the 2nd period to make it a 4-2 game.
Saxons' attackman Brett Carroll would score two consecutive goals several minutes later to lift the visitors to a 7-2 lead.
The Raiders would give Alfred fits throughout the 2nd and 3rd periods, as they out-scored the Saxons 6-5 over that span. The Saxons, however, would prove too much in the end by netting the last two goals of the game to seal the win.
Even with the loss, the Raiders led in many categories. Freshman face-off specialist Anthony Nucci Laura won 14 of 22 face-offs for the Raiders.
As a team, the Raiders picked up 29 ground balls and earned 13 successful clears.
The Raiders were led with Smith's five goals in the game. The Hilton, N.Y.-native had a total of 14 shots.
Brett Capps came off the bench to score three goals for the home team.
The Raiders will hit the road for next two games against NCAA Division II opponents in New Hampshire. On Saturday, the Raiders square-off against Franklin Pierce University at noon. The following Monday, the team will take on St. Anselm College at 4pm. Both teams are from the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Raiders next home game is Wednesday, March 14 at 5pm when they host Cazenovia College.
