Volleyball Hosts Conference Opener Today, Houghton Tomorrow

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 14, 2012) – The Redhawks begin a three match homes stand this afternoon with their conference opener against Dowling College at 4:30 pm. The team will then host Houghton College in non-conference action tomorrow at noon.
 
SCOUTING ROBERTS WESLEYAN (3-5/0-0 ECC)
The Redhawks split their two matches at the Tony Banner Memorial Invitational at Clarion (Pa.) Univeristy this past Saturday. The team fell to the host 3-1 before taking down Shepherd (W.Va.) University in five sets.
 
Alexa Antoni leads the Redhawks with 105 kills through the first eight matches while fellow senior hitter Gisela Ocasio has 83 kills.
 
Freshman Maggie Concannon has been solid in her debut season with 283 set assists.
 
SCOUTING DOWLING (6-1/0-0 ECC)
The Golden Lions have picked up right where they left off from last season. A year ago, Dowling advanced to the NCAA East Region semifinals, losing to conference rivals Bridgeport.
 
Leading the way for Dowling is Bethany Shepard with 117 kills through seven matches, averaging 4.33 kills per set. Shepard also leads the Golden Lions with 89 digs.
 
 
SCOUTING HOUGHTON (4-4/0-0 E8)
The Highlanders, who are now competing at the NCAA Division III level in the competitive Empire 8, have had mixed results in 2012 as they come into Saturday's match with a 4-4 record.
 
Most recently, Houghton split two matches at the Elmira College Tournament, picking up wins against Hartwick and Brockport.
 
Senior middle blocker Rebecca Dennee leads the Highlanders with 44 kills off of 146 total attacks. Dennee is also second on the team in total blocks with 25 (10 solo, 15 assists).

Roberts Wesleyan wraps up their home stand next Saturday (Sep. 22) when they host the University of Bridgeport at 1pm.
