ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (January 17, 2013) – The Redhawks came up short in a close game against Molloy College, 76-68, this evening.
The Redhawks made the Molloy work for the win as the visitors played it close down the stretch. With less than nine minutes to play,
Mike Stone would convert a three-point play to give the Redhawks a 57-54 lead.
Molloy responded when Matt McLeod drained a shot from long range before taking the lead for good when Richard Zoller hit a jump shot with 7:30 left on the clock.
Devin Grimes made it interesting after making a lay-up to cut the Lions' lead to just two-points with 2:02 remaining, to make it a 66-64 ball game. That was as close as the visitors would get as Molloy was able to close out the game from the free-throw line.
The Redhawks proved to be effective beyond the arc by shooting 50.0% from the field as Stone and
William Bromirski each shot well from long range. Stone finished 3 of 6 while Bromirski hit five from three-point range in the game as both players finished with a game-high 15 points.
Herbert Alexander was also 2 of 2 from three-point range for the Redhawks.
Junior forward
Patrick Downer picked up a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four assists and one blocked shot.
Molloy was led by John Petrucelli's 15 points as Brandon Williams and Tyler Hammett each notched 13 points.
As a team, the Redhawks shot 39.3% from the field compared to Molloy's 40.0%.
Perhaps the most glaring stat was Roberts Wesleyan's 21 turnovers in the game. The Lions were able to score 23 points off of the Redhawks' miscues as the visitors managed just seven points off of Molloys 16 giveaways.
The loss drops the Redhawks to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the East Coast Conference.
The team is back in action this Saturday when the visit Queens College with game-time scheduled for 4pm.
