Men's Basketball Visits Bridgeport Thursday to Start New Year

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 2, 2013) – The Redhawks open the 2013 portion of the schedule on the road Thursday when they visit the University of Bridgeport for a 7pm contest.

SCOUTING ROBERTS WESLEYAN (5-5/2-0 ECC)
The Redhawks have been idle since closing out 2012 with a 77-67 win at the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, Dec. 15.
 
Senior forward Devin Grimes comes into the new year leading the team in several categories, including points per game (16.6) and rebounds per game (13.6) through the first 10 games of the season. Grimes leads the East Coast Conference in all four rebounding categories (offensive, defensive, total rebounds, and rebounds per game).
 
From long range, Mike Stone continues to be one of the top threats in the conference as he is shooting 45.1% from beyond the tree-point line. The guard is second on the team in scoring and is averaging 12.4 points per game.
 
As a team, Roberts Wesleyan holds a slight edge in key defensive categories with a +1.5 rebounding margin as well as a +0.5 turnover margin this season.
 
The Redhawks are averaging 10.1 steals per game with freshman Tyrel Dixon leading the team with 22 steals while Patrick Downer has 21.
 
SCOUTING BRIDGEPORT (5-7/1-1 ECC)
The Purple Knights come into the game well rested as their last game was played on Dec. 19, a 75-72 win at Southern Connecticut State. After losing five straight games, Bridgeport has now won three of their last four.
 
Darian David, a senior guard, is averaging 16.7 points per game for Bridgeport and is shooting a respectable 37.7% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc this season.  Other players scoring in double figures are Ivan Simic (12.3) and Dion Waiters (10.2).
 
Bridgeport is +2.9 in rebounding as they average 38.0 rebounds per game while holding their opponents to just 35.1 rebounds per game.  Senior guard Omari Howard leads the Purple Knights with 95 rebounds, averaging 7.9 per game.
 
The team is nearly even in their turnover margin, coming into the game with a -0.1 turnover margin, however, Bridgeport averages three more steals per game than their opponents.
  
UP NEXT
The Redhawks will remain on the road this week as they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. to take on the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 3pm. The game is part of the East Coast Conference's first “Doubleheader of the Week” of the season and will be streamed live from the ECC's website.
