Men's Basketball: Late Three-Pointer Lifts Redhawks Past District of Columbia

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 26, 2013) – The Men's Basketball team dug deep to pick up a 71-69 win over the visiting Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia this evening in East Coast Conference action.

The Redhawks, who had been on a seven-game skid, needed a three-pointer with 13 seconds left on the clock from Mike Stone to lift the home team past UDC.

In a game that saw 13 ties and 16 lead changes, Roberts Wesleyan's three-point shooting proved to be the difference. Stone finished the game with five from beyond the arc, finishing with a team-high 19 points.

Herbert Aelexander was 2 of 3 from long range before having to sit on the bench due to early foul trouble, helping the Redhawks shoot 43.8% from three-point range.

The other difference in the game was the Redhawks scoring 23 second chance points compared to the Firebirds' five second chance points.

Junior forward Patrick Downer posted a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with 17 points a Roberts Wesleyan team that out-rebounded UDC 44 to 34. The double-double effort was Downer's third of the season.

Tyrel Dixon had another solid game with 15 points after going 7 of 13 from the floor. The freshman is now averaging 10.7 points per for the Redhawks.

Devin Grimes was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

As a team, Roberts Wesleyan shot 43.5% from the field while UDC shot just over 40%.

UDC was led by Quasim Jones' 21 points. The junior guard shot 50% from the floor, going 7 of 14 in the game.  D'Angelo Johnson was solid inside with 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds.

The win improved the Redhawks to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the ECC.

Roberts Wesleyan's next game is this Thursday when they travel to face Mercy College.
