Comeback Bid Falls Short for Women's Basketball at St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. (January 5, 2013) – The Women's Basketball team were narrowly defeated on the road this afternoon, falling 63-62 to St. Thomas Aquinas College.
 
Trailing by eight points with less than five minutes left on the clock, the visitors chipped away at the Spartans lead by scoring seven straight. 
 
After Marissa Sell converted two free throws with at the 3:58 mark, senior Brittant Williams hit a three-pointer with 1:45 to play to make it a 63-60 St. Thomas Aquinas lead.
 
Then with just two seconds remaining in the game, Sarah Alwardt made a lay-up to make it a one-point Spartans lead.
 
The home team, however, would hold on for the win, which evens the Redhawks conference record at 2-2 and 7-4 overall.
 
Marissa Bunce scored a season-best 17 points after hitting five shot from beyond the arc. Her previous best was 10 points against St. John Fisher College on Dec. 1. Bunce also recorded a season-high seven rebounds for the Redhawks.
 
Fellow senior Brittany Williams added 12 points in the game after shooting 50% from the field in addition to making a three-pointer and making all three of her free-throw attempts.
 
Marissa Bunce grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with eight points for the visitors while Lakiah Huff scored 10 points.
 
Both teams played evenly as the team stats show. The Redhawks forced 10 turnovers while giving the ball away 13 times. St. Thomas Aquinas shot just 32.4% from the field while Roberts Wesleyan shot 35.5%.
 
The Spartans had a slight rebounding edge of 49 to 42 and steals with 11 to 8.
 
The Redhawks will return home this Wednesday when they host LIU Post in the Voller Athletic Center at 6pm.
 
Tickets for the game are $3 at the door. Roberts Wesleyan College/Northeastern Seminary faculty, staff, and students are free with valid ID.
