Women's Basktbell: Redhawks Comeback Bid Falls Short in NCCAA Opener

WINONA LAKE, Ind. (March 13, 2013) – The Women's Basketball team tell to top-seeded Union (Tenn.) University this afternoon in overtime, 81-75, in the quarterfinals of the NCCAA National Championships.

The Redhawks, who entered the tournament as the eighth seed, gave it their all in what turned out to be a close game down the stretch.

Union's lead was in double-figures for most of the game until the Redhawks were able to chip away at the lead in the final six minutes of regulation.  The game was then sent into overtime when Sarah Alwardt got her tip-in to count just before the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 67-67.

In the extra period, the Bulldogs were able to pull away with effect free-throw shooting from Amy Philamee. The guard managed to hit four shots at the line in the final 25 seconds to secure the win for the top-seed.

For the Redhawks, senior forward Brittany Williams scored a game-high 31 points after going 11 of 15 from the field, 5 of 7 from long range, and 4 of 6 at the charity stripe.

Sophomore Marissa Sell chipped in 28 points, 14 of which came at the free-throw line as the forward was nearly perfect, making 14 of 15 shots. Sell also led the team with 12 rebounds to earn the double-double.

Marissa Bunce added nine points, all of which came from three-point range, in addition to her notching a team-high four assists.

The loss drops Roberts Wesleyan to 15-13 on the season as they prepare to take on fifth-seeded Shorter (Ga) University in a consolation game tomorrow at noon.
