WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 30, 2013) - The nationally (No.46) and regionally ranked (No.2) Firebirds from the University of the District of Columbia defeated Roberts Wesleyan, 6-3, in a hard fought conference match yesterday.
"This was a well-played high level collegiate match between two well matched teams.", said head coach tom Linhart.
The Redhawks prevailed at third doubles, with
Julio Toledo and
Jordan Sadowitz winning 8-2 against UDC's Carlos Quiroga and Simon Bratke. After the Firebirds took first doubles, 8-2, the Redhawks second doubles team of
Beka Buchukuri and
Robert Beer dropped a hotly contested match 8-2.
Roberts Wesleyan notched wins at fifth singles with Beer winning 6-3, 6-4 over Quiroga, and sixth singles from
Emanuel Rauchle 6-0, 6-1 over Bratke.
"I am very pleased with how we played,” said Linhart. #We had our opportunities to pull off the upset, but good teams like the District of Columbia know how to finish. This match shows me that if we continue to work hard, we can be a very competitive team in the ECC."
The Redhawks fall to 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the East Coast Conference play while returning to action this Tuesday at home against Elmira College at 4pm.
