ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 24, 2014) – The Men's Basketball team picked up a crucial East Coast Conference win this evening, defeating Mercy College at home, 56-52.
The home standing Redhawks, who led by as much as 13 points early in the second half, was led by
William Bromirski and
Tyrel Dixon who each scored 14 points.
Mercy was able to overcome Roberts Wesleyan's double digit lead in the second stanza when they took the lead with a three-pointer from Terrance Murchie at the 8:45 mark. The teams then traded shots, evening the score on several occasions.
But with 51 seconds remaining, Bromirski hit a jumper to give the Redhawks the lead for good as Dixon drained a pair of free-throws to salvage the victory.
Bromirski ended up hitting three shots from beyond the arc for the Redhawks as Dixon went 5 of 12 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 at the free-throw line.
Other top scorers for the Roberts Wesleyan included
Patrick Downer, who had 11 points, and
Isaac Medeiros, who added 10 points.
As a team, the Redhawks shot just 34.5% from the field, but were a solid 73.3% at the charity stripe.
The Mavericks were led by Dan Pierrot's 11 points as he was 3 of 9 from long range.
The win improves Roberts Wesleyan to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the East Coast Conference. They are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 4pm.Â
