Men’s Soccer Beats Mercy in Aggressive Match

The men came back from an early deficit to win 3-1

Rochester, N.Y. (October 5, 2014) – The Men's Soccer team downed  Mercy College this afternoon in a conference match up.

The Redhawks started down an early goal in the second minute of play when Mercy scored off of a corner kick.  Yet, the men would work hard to go up 2-1 by the end of the half. Roberts Wesleyan's first goal was headed in by transfer Damien Pagano off a cross from Sam Moody.  Their second goal came in the 42nd minute when freshman Alex Loete took advantage of a bad touch from a Mercy defender. Loete took the ball from about half in a breakaway beating several defenders to score Roberts Wesleyan's second goal.

The first half was not without controversy. The Refs called back a goal after Mercy took a free kick before the whistle. On Mercy's second attempt for the same free kick the referees also recalled the offsided goal.  The game became even more physical with fouls being called on each team.

Within the first 20 minutes of the second half the Redhawks put away their third and final goal. Cameron Stewart turned on a defender inside the 18 yd box from a through ball from Malcolm Shaw.

Defensively goalie Michael Scavone had one recoded save but came out of the goal several times to grab dangerous balls from corners and crosses. Defensemen Tyler Fiamengo also headed the ball out of the goal after a muddled mix up from a corner to keep Roberts Wesleyan up by two in the last few minutes of play.

The win puts the Redhawks at 6-2-2 overall  and 3-2 in the ECC.

The Redhawks are on the road to take on College of Saint Rose in Albany Wednesday October 8th at 7pm.
