BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 14, 2014) – Roberts Wesleyan fell to the No. 1 seed Bridgeport in straight sets this evening in the East Coast Conference Championship semifinals.
The Redhawks, who were the fourth seeds, played Bridgeport to the brink in the first set before narrowly falling, 29-27. The Purple Knights, who went 16-0 in ECC play this season, went on to dominate in the next two sets with identical scores of 25-14.
The way the match ended was not what the Redhawks had in mind as they played Bridgeport to both four and five sets in the regular season.
However, freshman
Courtney Taylor was a bright spot as she tallied a match-high 15 kills for Roberts Wesleyan. The outside hitter finished the season with a team-high 321 kills and a 3.12 kills per set average.
Both
Judy Schultz and
Kendall Havener added seven kills in the match.
As a team, the Redhawks posted a .212 hitting percentage.
The Purple Knights saw the ECC's Player of the Year, Biljana Savic lead the home team with 13 kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Both Sarah Rose and Shen Ying each added 10 kills.
With the win, Bridgeport moves on to the finals against the winner of the No. 2 Dowling/No. 3 LIU Post match tomorrow at 8pm.
Roberts Wesleyan wraps up the year with a 16-11 overall record. The team also holds the disitinction of being the first team from Roberts Wesleyan to qualify for an ECC postseason tournament.
