ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2014) – Roberts Wesleyan hosts Houghton this Saturday for the NCCAA East Region final at 5:00 p.m. The winner of the game will receive the region's automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championships in December.
The game is a re-match of a regular season meeting between the two programs that saw the Redhawks fall, 4-0, on the road to Houghton on Oct. 28. In that game, Houghton's leading scorer Jared Toth scored twice to lead the team to the win.
Roberts Wesleyan is coming into the game on a high after ending the regular season with a resounding 3-0 win over NYIT, who was ranked No. 20 at the time. That result was the first time the Redhawks had defeated a nationally ranked team at the Division II level.
The team is led by senior forward
Michael Cunningham, who was recently named to the East Coast Conference's All-Conference Second Team. Cunningham completed the regular season with a career-high 28 points (10 goals, 8 assists).
In goal,
Michael Scavone will look to earn his sixth clean sheet of the season. The junior comes into the game with a 1.10 goals against average and .784 saves percentage after playing in all 18 games.
The Redhawks are the No. 1 seed in the East Region tournament, which saw No. 3 Houghton defeat No. 2 Lancaster Bible, 1-0, last Saturday. To win the game, the Highlanders needed a goal from Toth in the 78
th minute after dominating play against the Chargers. In that game, Houghton outshot Lancaster Bible, 21 to 5.
Saturday's game will be play on the auxiliary Turf Field due to this week's winter weather. Â
