Rochester, N.Y. (November 22, 2014) – The women's Basketball team won their home opener this evening when they beat Georgian Court 80-60 in non-conference play.
Jenna Johnson and Lucy Covely both made three point shots to give the Redhawks the early lead. Covely, a freshman, would end her first game with 13 points and five rebounds. Coach
Bob Segave identified the importance of the early threes by saying, "I felt our three point shooting early in the game opened up our inside game and Marissa and Samantha were able to capitalize on 1:1 situations"
Marissa Sell notched a double double with a game high of 23 points and 11 rebounds; she was 5 of 6 from the line. Sell and Junior
Samantha Courtney were a combined 16 of 28 from the field. Courtney recorded 16 points for the Redhawks she also boasted a game high four blocks.
Roberts Wesleyan continued to hold the lead throughout the first half which ended 39 – 33.
Mid-way through the second half Georgian Court made a run to tie the Redhawks to then go up by two. Senior
Marissa Sell evened the score with a jumper to tie the game at 48. Roberts Wesleyan then took over ending the game 80-60.
Coach Sagave commented on the run by Georgian Court, "We got a little cold shooting the ball and we got away from going inside to our forwards, but once we got back to what we do best we were able to take back control of the game."
Offensively,
Ashley Cianfriglia lead the team in assists with five, she also added nine points. Coach Segave also noted the impressive effort of
Carneisha Henry in rebounding for the Redhawks. Henry had a game high 14 rebounds and was integral in defending near the basket.
The Redhawks were 43.9% from the field, 28.3% from beyond the arc and 65% from the line.
Roberts Wesleyan starts off the season with a 1-0 record. They are on the road to play throughway rivals Le Moyne this Saturday November 29
th at 12pm.
