KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Dec. 1, 2014) – Senior forward
Michael Cunningham scored in the 89
th minute to force a 2-2 draw with top-seeded Mississippi College in the opening pool play game of the NCCAA National Championships this afternoon.
Cunningham led the Redhawks as he also scored Roberts Wesleyan's first goal in the 79
th minute. In all, Cunningham put up six shots against the Choctaws. With the two goals, the senior now has a team-high 10 goals on the season.
Mississippi took the lead twice in the game. The first goal came in the 41
st minute when Ewahia Amhanesi found the back of the net. The Choctaws then made it 2-1 when Stephen Roberts scored in the 85
th minute.
In goal,
Michael Scavone was called on to make three saves to help Roberts Wesleyan earn the draw.
Both teams played evenly as the No. 9 Redhawks had 19 total shots compared to Mississippi's 18 shots. Roberts Wesleyan also had the slight edge in shots on goal with seven compared to the Choctaws' five.
Roberts Wesleyan, who is now 11-6-3 overall, is back in action tomorrow at 2pm when they take on No. 6 Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) in their second and final pool play game.
