Rochester, N.Y. (December 12, 2014) – The women's basketball team won 76 to 70 in overtime this afternoon against Molloy in ECC action.
The Redhawks started out with the lead;
Lucy Covley knocked down a three in the first few minutes to put the Redhawks on the board. The three was the first of five for Covley as she shot perfectly from beyond the arc. The freshman shot a game high 20 points, she also added five rebounds.
While play was close at first, Roberts Wesleyan took control towards the end of the first half. Their largest lead came with a jumper from
Samantha Courtney to give the Redhawks a lead of 14 points. Courtney notched a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The first half ended with Roberts Wesleyan up by 12 (37-25).
Senior
Marissa Sell earned her 1000
th point mid-way through the second half with a layup after an offensive rebound. By the end of the game she posted 18 points and now has a total of 1006 points total for her career. She is now the ninth women's player to reach the 1000 point mark. The last player to do so was Sarah Child in 2012. Sell ended the game with a double double as she had 14 rebounds, a game high. Sell now has now racked up 805 rebounds for her career.
In the end of the second half Roberts Wesleyan started to lose their lead, Molloy's Nicole Arnone tied up the game with a good free throw and the second half ended tied at 64.
Overtime started out bitterly close, but the Redhawks were able to pull away in the last few minutes. Roberts Wesleyan Made a 5-0 run to end the game 76 – 70.
Ashley Cianfriglia and
Necedah James both were key offensively scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. Cianfriglia also had 3 assists. Defensively
Carneisha Henry had 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Redhawks. Roberts Wesleyan had 19 second chance points to Molloy's nine.
The Redhawks were 40.6% from the field 50% from beyond the arc and 63% from the line.
The win advances Roberts Wesleyan to 5-2 and 1-1 in the ECC.
The Redhawks are on the Road Friday December 19
th to play University of the District of Columbia at 7pm.
