ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 1, 2014) – Senior forward
Patrick Downer scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half to lead Roberts Wesleyan past New York Institute of Technology, 68-66, this afternoon.
The win gave the Redhawks the season sweep over the visiting Bears after winning by one point on the road earlier in the season.
Both teams played each other closely as there were five lead changes in the game. Â Despite an early 20-6 run to start the game, NYIT cooled off the rest of the way. After trailing the Bears 32-26 at halftime, the Redhawks took the lead at the 16:23 mark after going on an 11-2 run to start the second half.
With two minutes remaining, sophomore forward
William Bromirski hit a three to tie the game at 66-66. He then hit a clutch free-throw with 29 seconds left on the clock to give the home team the one-point lead. Then with just 10 clicks left, Downer sealed the win with another good free-throw.
Downer ended the night with a game-high 17 points after going 5 of 15 from the field and 7-9 at the charity stripe.
Isaac Medeiros also had a productive game with 16 points and seven rebounds as Herb Alexander chipped in a season-high 14 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.
As a team, the Redhawks shot 36.7% from the field and a paltry 21.1% from beyond the arc. Perhaps the biggest difference in the game was NYIT's 23 fouls, giving Roberts Wesleyan the chance to make 20 of 29 shots from the free-throw line.
The win puts Roberts Wesleyan at 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the East Coast Conference. They are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host LIU Post at 4pm.
