LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sep. 7, 2014) – Roberts Wesleyan opened up the 2014 season with an impressive showing at the Georgian Court University tournament this weekend.

The Redhawks went 3-1 over four matches, including wins over several competitive teams from last season. In their second match on Saturday, the Redhawks won the final three sets to defeat Caldewell University 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 15-12). Caldwell also had a productive 2013 season, advancing to the CACC tournament semifinals.

On Sunday, the Redhawks opened the day with a three set loss (20-25, 11-25, 17-25) to a Franklin Pierce University squad that advanced to the NCAA Division II East Region quarterfinals a year ago. However, Roberts Wesleyan finished the weekend on a high note, defeating Southern New Hampshire University in a five-set affair (25-22, 15-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10).

Over the four matches, the Redhawks were led by freshman Courtney Taylor. The outside hitter led the team with 52 kills while seniors Kendall Havener and Jordan Wilson tallied 43 and 41 kills respectively. Out of the trio, Wilson was the most effective with a .366 hitting percentage while Taylor led with an average of 3.06 kills per set.

Maggie Concannon racked up 145 assists, averaging 8.53 assists per set as Becca Maher notched a team-high 28 digs.

Defensively, Havener had two solo blocks while Wilson contributed with six block assists.

Roberts Wesleyan is off until Wednesday, Sep. 10 when they travel east down the Thruway to take on non-conference foes Le Moyne College for a 6pm match.
