Hot Shooting Sends Roberts Wesleyan Past St. Thomas Aquinas

Covley goes five for five from the three point line

Sparkill, N.Y. (January 17, 2015) - The Women's Basketball team scored a season high 92 points to earn a win on the road against conference rivals St. Thomas Aquinas. The final score was 92 -62, giving the Redhawks a record of 10-3 and 5-2 in the ECC. This is now the fourth time that Roberts Wesleyan has scored 80 or more in a game.

The Redhawks now extend their win streak to five with the two wins they picked up this weekend on the road.

St. Thomas Aquinas Holds on in the First Half
Roberts Wesleyan got on the board first with a long range shot by Necedah James. The freshman would go on to score nine points by the end of the game. The early lead would not hold as St. Thomas Aquinas continued to battle back.

The first lead change of the game came in the 17th minute when Jenna Erickson of St Thomas Aquinas made her first three-point shot. Erickson was a key player for the Spartans scoring 10 points by the end of the game. The only other St. Thomas Aquinas player to score in the double digits was Alexis Breheny, who led the Spartans with 12 points.

There were a total of eight lead changes, all of which came in the first half. The Spartan's largest lead came with eight minutes to go before the break, they lead the Redhawks by eight points (27-19).

Redhawks End First Half with a Commanding Run
After trailing by eight points, Samantha Courtney converted a three point play when she made a free thow after being fouled by Adiya Henderson on a good layup. This was the catalyst to Roberts Wesleyan's 15-0 run to take the lead from the Spartan's for good.

The Redhawks, now up by seven points (34-27), were able to hold on to their lead to end the half 41-32.

Roberts Wesleyan Takes Control in the Second Half
The Redhawks scored 51 points in the second half, beating their season record 50 points in a 20 minute period from last nights match up against Mercy College.  Brooke Fields made the first two shots for the Redhawks out of the gate to put Roberts Wesleyan up 46-32.

The second half also saw the Redhawks largest lead of the game. With just over five minutes left to play, a layup by Marissa Sell put the Redhawks up by 31 points (79-48). Sell was assisted by Carniesha Henry  who led in assists with six for the afternoon.

Strong Scoring Gives Roberts Wesleyan a Sound Win
The Redhawks commanding win was credited to an offense that again had four players scoring in the double digits.

Samantha Courtney lead with a game high 20 points and was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. She was just short of a double double with 9 rebounds; Courtney also posted 3 blocks. Brooke Fields was also key offensively with 10 points at five assists. Senior Marissa Sell totaled 18 points and 6 rebounds for the match up.

In an amazing shooting performance, the Redhawks  were 64.6 percent from the field, an impressive 90 percent from long range and 80.8% from the line. Roberts Wesleyan was able to keep the Spartans field shooting to under 40 percent and their long range shooting to just 16.7 percent.

Covley on Fire From Beyond the Arc
Freshman Lucy Covley continues her impressive three point shooting streak. In last weekend's home games, her long range shooting was key as she totaled 40 points for the two match ups. This weekend against Mercy she lead with 17 points and was 3 - 6 from long range.

Against St. Thomas Aquinas Covley scored 19 points for the Redhawks. She was also a perfect 5-5 from beyond the arc. The freshman is currently ranked 4th in the ECC for three point percentage with 40.4 percent.
