Women's Basketball Falls to Daemen, 70-69

A late rally by the Wildcats doomed Roberts Wesleyan in a crucial ECC contest

AMHERST, N.Y. (January 20, 2015) – Roberts Wesleyan saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt this evening as Daemen (8-6, 5-3 ECC) managed to come-from-behind at home to win 70-69 against their Thruway rivals.
 
With the loss, Roberts Wesleyan (10-4, 5-3 ECC) is now tied in the conference standings with the Wildcats.
 
Three players scored in double-digits for Roberts Wesleyan as Lucy Covley led with 14 points. Marissa Sell and Carneisha Henry each posted double-doubles.
 
Home Team Starts Strong
To start the game, Daemen jumped out to an eight-point lead over the first four minutes with Shy Britton scoring six of their first 11 points. The Wildcats led for a long stretch in the first half until Roberts Wesleyan took the lead with 9:34 remaining when Marissa Sell scored two of her 13 points.
 
Roberts Wesleyan Comes Back, Then Pulls Aheads
After trading several baskets, the visiting Redhawks started to assert the will over Daemen. With the score tied at 25, Roberts Wesleyan strung together an 11 to 1 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 36-26 lead before heading into the break with the score reading 38-30 to their advantage.
 
Sell was a force in the first half, collecting 10 of her 15 rebounds while scoring seven points, going 3 of 7 from the field while splitting a pair of free-throws.
 
In the second half, the Redhawks continued their dominant play, extending their lead to 13 points on four occasions before Daemen began their rally.
 
Wildcats Claw Their Way Back
A pair of free throws by Leah McDonnell at the 6:56 mark, which put the score at 64-53, was the start for Daemen's comeback.
 
Over the final six minutes, the Wildcats managed to hold Roberts Wesleyan a three-point field goal and one jump shot.
 
Daemen Gets Hot to Steal the Win
While their defense held the Redhawks in check, Daemen's offense got hot in the final minutes of the game as they hit four consecutive three-pointers to seal the one point victory.
