Women’s Basketball Defeats NYIT, 80-62

A strong start helped the Redhawks come out on top

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 23, 2015) - Roberts Wesleyan had a strong comeback after their close loss to Daemen earlier this week. In tonight's competition against NYIT (12-4, 7-2 ECC), Roberts Wesleyan coming out on top with a final score of 80-62. 

This is now the Redhawks (11-4, 6-3 ECC) fifth time scoring over 80 points in a game.

The Redhawks Dominate the First Half
Although Roberts Wesleyan was not first on the board, within the first four minutes of game, the Redhawks went on a 14-5 run, starting with Brooke Fields, who hit a long range shot. Fields scored a total of 10 points in this game. Defensively, the Redhawks had five steals and five blocks to help them with such a strong start.

Roberts Wesleyan Brings Down Second in Conference
Prior to tonight's match, NYIT was 7-1 in the ECC, making them second in the conference. NYIT's top shooter's, Dina Ragab and Shanice Allen, were controlled by the Redhawks defence. Dina Ragab, who averages over 14 points per game, only scored five in tonight's match.

NYIT Tries to Make a Comeback in the Second Half
The Bears came out strong starting the second half, going on a 14-9 point run. This still left NYIT down by 10 with 13:51 left in the second half.  The Bears were not able to keep up with the Redhawks strong defense.

The Key to Tonight's Game
Offensively, the Redhawks had two players, Carneisha Henry and Marissa Sell, who earned double doubles. On top of that, the Redhawks had six players score in the double digits. Lucy Covley had a team high of 16 points. The Redhawks had a total of 44 defensive rebounds, Marissa Sell grabbing 10 of them.
