ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 24, 2015) - The Redhawks hosted both NYIT (12-4, 7-2 ECC) and LIU Post (11-7, 7-3 ECC) this weekend and came out on top both games. After a close first half, the Redhawks ended the game with a 79-67 win over LIU Post.
A Close First Half
Carneisha Henry was the first to put points on the board for the Redhawks, giving them a starting lead. Within the first four minutes of the game, there were two lead changes. With 16:01 left in the first half, the Redhawks gained the lead and maintained it for the rest of the game. The Redhawks had no more than a 10-point lead in the first half as the Pioneers continued to chip away little by little.
Strong Shooting Kept the Redhawks Alive
Samantha Courtney went five for five from the field and put 11 points total on the board for the Redhawks. Marissa Sell led the team with 22 points and 10 rebounds, making this her second double double for this weekend. Jenna Johnson added eight points and went two for two from the 3-point line.
An Effective Defense is Key
The Redhawks defensive had to work hard to help control some of LIU Post's key players. Chelsea Williams, one who averages 21.2 points a game, led the Pioneers with 31 points, contributing to almost half the team's total points. Nyasia Davis added another 18 for the Pioneers.
A team total of nine steals and five blocks helped the Redhawks control the Pioneers offense a little more.
A Strong Finish
The Redhawks continued to push forward in the second half. With 9:50 left in the second half, Brooke Fields hit a three to bring the Redhawks ahead by 17. Never letting up and continuing to play strong until the end help the Redhawks clinch the win by 12 points.
