Rockville Centre, N.Y. (January 31, 2015) - The women's basketball team went 2-0 this weekend with their 79-57 win over Molloy this afternoon. The win gives the Redhawks a record of 14-4 and 9-3 in the ECC.
Roberts Wesleyan currently holds the third spot in ECC standings. This coming weekend the Redhawks will host the University of the District of Colombia the current leader of the ECC with a record of 17 -3 and 10-2 in the ECC. Action starts at 2pm on Saturday February 8th.
Since the start of the new year Roberts Wesleyan has gone 9-1, with their only loss going to Daemen by just one point. Not only are the Redhawks winning games, but the majority of their wins have been in the double digits. The game against Molloy this afternoon was no exception.
Roberts Wesleyan Battles for the LeadWhile the Redhawks may have had a decisive win, the beginning of the first half was close with two ties and five lead changes. Molloy was on the board first with a jumper by Nicole Arnone, but minutes later
Samantha Courtney tied things up. Just three minutes into the game Molloy gained their largest lead of three,with a layup by Ally Leftridge to go up 5-2. The game continued in a back and fourth pattern with both teams making just one or two point gains over the other.
The Redhawks Take OffWith just eight minutes to go in the first half, the Redhawks went on a 14-1 run to close out the half 29-16. The run started with a layup by
Lakiah Huff. She led the Redhawks in assists with four and also added four rebounds. Roberts Wesleyan was able to keep Molloy's field goal percentage to just 21.8% in the first half.
Roberts Wesleyan started the second half strong;
Marissa Sell got the defensive rebound off a missed Molloy shot and then got the bucket to start the second half up by 15. Sell is currently leading the ECC in rebounds per game, in the match against Molloy she picked up 16.Â
The Redhawks had a strong second half and held a double digit lead the entire time. Their largest lead came with just seconds left with a made three pointer by
Brooke Fields to go up by 23 (79-56). Fields was four of six from long range.Â
Molloy's Bench Comes out StrongMolloy's two highest scoring players came off the bench in todays match up. Kimani Jackson posted 14 points and Maggie Salomone contributed 11. Overall the Lions bench had 40 of Molloy's 57 points. Molloy's shooting recovered in the second half, but the deficit build in the first half made catching up to Roberts Wesleyan too hard of a task.
The Lions split their weekend at home winning to Damen yesterday evening but suffering a loss to the Redhawks this afternoon.
Strong Shooting Gives the Redhawks the EdgeRoberts Wesleyan ended the game shooting 52.9% from the field, 57.1% from beyond the arc and 70.8% from the line. With four players shooting in the double digits, the Redhawks were unstoppable.
Freshman
Brooke Fields led the game in points; she totaled 19 points and also notched three steals. Classmate
Lucy Covley had 17 points for the Redhawks, nine of which came from long range.Â
Marissa Sell earned a double double with 18 points on top of her 16 rebounds. Junior,
Samantha Courtney rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points. Courtney was also strong defensively with six rebounds and two blocks.
