Women's Basketball Breezes by Bridgeport

Strong shooting by several Roberts Wesleyan players propels the Redhawks to victory

Rochester, N.Y. (January 9, 2014) - The women's basketball team beat Bridgeport with a definitive 74 -56 win this evening in ECC action.

While Bridgeport started out leading in the first few plays, freshman Lucy Covley sunk a three pointer in the 16th minute to put Roberts Wesleyan in the lead. Covley was strong from beyond the arc as she went 6-13. Covley also had a game high 20 points and a game high 7 assists. The Redhawks never lost the lead and were up by 15 at the end of the first half, 38-23.

The Redhawks continued strong in the second half. Carneisha Henry came up with 12 points and added two blocks. Other top scorers for the Redhawks included junior Samantha Courtney with 10 points and six rebounds and freshman Brooke Fields with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Marissa Sell lead the game in rebounds with 17, which also places her at 5th all time in program history. Sell currently holds the record with 23 rebounds which she earned in a game against Oklahoma Christian at the 2014 NCCAA National Championship Tournament. Against Bridgeport, Sell posted11 points giving her the double double, as well as five assists.

As a team the Redhawks were 41.8% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 69.2% from the line.

The win gives Roberts Wesleyan a record of 7-3 and 2-2 in the ECC.

The Redhawks are home again tomorrow where they face ECC competitors Dowling College at 2pm.
