Women's Basketball Downs St. Thomas Aquinas in Overtime Thriller

The freshmen duo of Lucy Covley and Necedah James guided the Redhawks to a narrow win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 21, 2015) – Roberts Wesleyan picked up their fourth straight win this afternoon, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas in overtime, 50-46.

The Redhawks (18-5, 13-4 ECC) rode a double-double from Lucy Covley while her classmate Necedah James added 12 points in the win.

St. Thomas Aquinas (12-15, 8-10 ECC) are currently in the fight for the sixth and final playoff spot and were playing that way throughout the game, holding Roberts Wesleyan to single-digits leads.

The largest lead of the game was just nine points for the Redhawks when James made a layup with 7:51 left in the first half, putting the home team up, 22-13.

After leading by eight points with a little more than four minutes remaining in regulation, the Spartans clawed their way back with a 10-2 run that was capped off by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Jenna Erickson, tying the score at 40-40, sending the game into overtime.

The game marked the third time this season Roberts Wesleyan had needed to play extra minutes. The other two occasions both resulted in wins as they downed Molloy at home on Dec. 13 as well as defeating SUNY Geneseo in the Wendy's College Classic on Dec. 4.

In this game, the Redhawks outscored St. Thomas Aquinas 10-6 in the overtime session, six of which came from James, a freshman guard.

Despite only going 3 of 11 from the field, James was an effective 5 of 6 at the line that included three coming in overtime.

For Covley, the freshman picked up her first double-double of the season with her 14 points and 12 rebounds and has now scored in double-digits 17 times in her debut campaign.

Roberts Wesleyan has a quick turnaround as they welcome Daemen this Tuesday for Senior Night. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
