Women's Basketball Stumbles in Regular Season Finale

Four players scored in double-digits, but cold shooting in the first half doomed the Redhawks

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 1, 2015) – Roberts Wesleyan saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on national television this afternoon as they fell on the road to LIU Post in the regular season finale.

With the loss, the Redhawks (20-6, 15-5 ECC) earn the No. 3 seed in this week's East Coast Conference tournament and will host No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

In the game, the Pioneers (17-11, 11-7 ECC) never trailed Roberts Wesleyan while mounting a massive 17-point lead in the first half.

Despite some cold shooting in the first half, the Redhawks rallied over the final six minutes of the half to make it a 30-23 Pioneer lead at the break. However, that momentum didn't last as LIU Post shot out to a 15-point lead over the first five minutes of the second half.

Roberts Wesleyan battled back again, cutting the lead to one when Lucy Covley drained a three with 9:13 remaining, putting the score at 49-48 in favor of the Pioneers.

After the teams traded baskets, Roberts Wesleyan again trailed by just one point with 3:10 remaining when Marissa Sell made a nice fast-break layup from a long pass from Covley. That however, was as close as the Redhawks would get as LIU Post distanced themselves over the final three minutes.

Four players managed to score in double-digits on the day with Covley leading the pack with 18 points after hitting four shots from beyond the arc.

Sell earned the double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as Brooke Fields added 12 points and Necedah James tallied 11.

As a team, the Redhawks shot better in the second half by shooting an even 50.0 percent from the field, but the cold 22.5 percent in first half was too much to shake.

Roberts Wesleyan also led the Pioneers in several categories including 16 points off turnovers as LIU Post has just three.  The Redhawks also led 12-0 in fast break points and 6-0 in bench points.
