Richmond, Va. – A 29-point outburst by
Brooke Fields along with a 25-point performance by
Lucy Covley wasn't enough as the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to Virginia Union University 89-100 on Monday afternoon.
Roberts Wesleyan again found a rhythm from behind the arc hitting 17 three-pointers in the game to tie the program single-game record that was set on Nov. 12 against Felician University. The team went 17-for-46 (37%) from long range with Covley hitting eight and Fields hitting five. But the Redhawk's outside game was trumped by the success Virginia Union found down low as they outscored Roberts 66-16 in points in the paint.
The Redhawks saw an early lead in the game slip away quickly as the turnovers piled up, falling behind by 23 in late in the second quarter. Roberts Wesleyan had 19 turnovers in the contest while the Panthers converted the turnovers into 30 points.
Roberts was able to cut into the Virginia Union lead in the fourth quarter bringing the score to 82-92 with a minute left to play, but it was too little, too late as the comeback attempt came up short.
Lady Walker led the Panthers with a double-double, scoring 24 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in the winning effort.
"We played hard against a very talented team," head coach
Gary Andrews said. "Their size hurt us, but I was proud that we kept working hard and didn't give up."
Roberts Wesleyan (4-2) will prepare to take on Le Moyne College in Syracuse on Wednesday.
