Springfield, Mass. – Four players scored in double digits to push the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team past American International College on Saturday afternoon, 83-75.
Freshman guard
Taya Andrews was 5-for-10 (50%) from the field with a game-high 18 points to lead the Redhawks. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line helping Roberts Wesleyan to a 25-for-27 (92.6%) shooting performance from the charity stripe. As a team the Redhawks are shooting just under 86-percent from the free throw line this year and are ranked No. 3 in the NCAA DII in the category.
Roberts Wesleyan was able to break the game open with a 10-0 run to start the second quarter after holding a 25-23 lead following the first. The Redhawks held the Yellow Jackets to just nine points in the second to go into halftime with a comfortable 47-32 lead.
American International looked to Dana Watts to carry the offense and cut the deficit, but Roberts was able to hang on to the lead much in part to the 18-for-18 free throw shooting in the second half to seal the victory. Watts finished the game with 30 points and eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
"I am really proud of our team," head coach
Gary Andrews said. "We worked really hard and played unselfishly to beat a quality team on the road. I thought everyone contributed and I loved the enthusiasm from our bench. Also making 25-of-27 free throws was huge."
Besides Andrews scoring in double digits,
Brooke Fields had 15 points while
Emily Miller and
Necedah James both scored 12 each.
Roberts Wesleyan (5-3, 0-1 ECC) pick up their first road win of the season and look ahead to their second East Coast Conference matchup on Wednesday when they take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College. The game is slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
