Bridgeport, Conn. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team ended its season on Wednesday night losing to the University of Bridgeport 4-0 in the East Coast Conference Semifinals, a rematch of last year's championship game.
The Redhawks were able to hold their own against the No.7 team in the nation for much of the first half absorbing the Knights 21 shots in the first half. Goalkeeper
Kelsey Brinkel came up big making 15 saves on the evening.
Roberts Wesleyan nearly got on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute when
Bella Mitrevski's free kick hit the crossbar. But just three minutes later it was the Knights who found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Hanne Neby hit a low shot that beat Brinkel to the corner of the net. The goal was assisted on by Idoia Agirre. Again, just before halftime, Redhawk
Tiffany Melendez nearly scored on a breakaway resulting in a corner kick. The teams went into the halftime intermission with a 1-0 scoreline.
In the second half, it was Bridgeport that gained momentum and poured on the pressure yielding a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute off a header by Flo Gamby from a free kick taken by Nicola Worthington.
The Knights added two more goals in the 65th and 67th minute to seal the victory and move on to the ECC championship game against LIU Post. The Redhawks previously played LIU Post in the regular season to a 0-0 tie.
"I thought the group came out strong and put pressure on a very good opponent," head coach
Sarah McClellan noted, "It was a tough environment on the road. I'm proud of our seniors and the team's accomplishments this season. We have set a solid level to build upon."
The Redhawks finished the game with ten shots and two on net.
