Late Goal Leads to Loss in Season Opener for Women's Soccer

Box Score

Syracuse, NY - A late second half goal by Le Moyne resulted in a season opening loss for the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team.

Le Moyne junior forward, Stephanie Liberati came off the bench and scored the only goal of the game with just less than six minutes to go in regulation. The shot snuck by Redhawk's starting goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel from just six yards out.

"We have to learn from how we played," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "We played a little bit too tentative I think with it being our first game and not wanting to make mistakes."

The Redhawks struggled to get going offensively as they were outshot by the Dolphins 20-9 with three shots put on goal. A couple near breakaway opportunities for Roberts Wesleyan gave the offense glimpses of hope, but none were able to beat Le Moyne's charging goalkeeper.

With the attacking Le Moyne offense, Brinkel stood strong in net leading the game with nine total saves.

"We have to be willing to take the next step forward and bounce back for our next upcoming game," McClellan said.

The next game will be the home opener for the Redhawks. They will play Wilmington University (Del.) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
