Volleyball Wins Second Straight ECC Match

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team won their second straight East Coast Conference match on Sunday, defeating Molloy College in four sets.

Despite dropping the first set 25-21 Roberts Wesleyan went on to win three straight sets to secure their second straight ECC win and extend their winning streak to four games.

Leading the Redhawks on offense was junior setter Elisabeth Rivera who dished out 53 assists in the match. "Elisabeth kept the offense moving forward with strong choices, working the seams and keeping Molloy off balance," head coach Doug Porterfield said.

In the second set Roberts Wesleyan found themselves down 12-16 after three straight kills by Molloy. Following a timeout the Redhawks responded with three straight points of their own coming off an Anjali Thomson kill and two errors on the Lions. As the set was extended Roberts Wesleyan was able to get two kills from Rachel Holmes and Kate Steger to win the set 28-26.

Steger, who led the game with 20 kills, came up big in the third set with three kills to put the Redhawks up 19-15. Roberts Wesleyan continued to push the lead, going up 22-16 after kills by Kristina Button and Riley Moll. The Lions fought back and closed the gap to bring the score to 24-23 but senior Alexandre Tahauri finished off the last point with a kill, assisted by Rivera.

The Redhawks ran away with the fourth set winning 25-19. The team cruised to a nine point lead before allowing Molloy to tighten the score 24-19, but Steger who score the final point in the second set again finished off the set with a kill to claim the victory.

Roberts Wesleyan (5-6, 2-0 ECC) will host their first home volleyball match on Friday at 7 p.m. when they face a talented NYIT team that is 11-2.
