Rochester, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team dominated East Coast Conference opponent NYIT on Saturday afternoon using an early 24 point run to go on to 84-58 win.
The Redhawks fell behind early with NYIT taking a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the game. But the tables turned drastically as Roberts went on a 24-0 run that left the Bears without a made field goal until the 6:44 mark in the second quarter. Roberts Wesleyan's defense stifled the Bears as the opponent shot just 5-for-35 (14.29%) from the field in the first half and was just 1-for-13 (7.69%) from the free throw line.
Five different Redhawks scored in double digits with freshman guard
Taya Andrews leading the bunch with 17 points. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native added five rebounds. Freshman forward
Emily Miller was one rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. She also had two blocks, two assists and one steal.
"I thought we did a great job moving the ball and played very good defense with good rebounding," said head coach
Gary Andrews. "We had five girls in double figures which is a balance we like."
Roberts didn't allow their lead to drop under 20 points in the second half and extended the advantage to 41 points late in the fourth quarter.
Both teams came into the contest with similar records in the ECC battle. The win puts the Redhawks in fifth place in the conference at 10-7 and 4-3 in the ECC. They sit behind Queens, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Molloy and LIU Post.
Roberts Wesleyan takes the court again on Wednesday when they travel to face Daemen College at 6 p.m.
