Women’s Basketball Stumbles at Daemen

Amherst, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team dropped their eighth game of the season after losing to Daemen on Wednesday night, 88-80.

Freshman Emily Miller posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds to get her third double-double stat line of the season. Guard Necedah James also had a double-double scoring 13 points and dishing out 10 assists.

The Redhawks struggled to overcome the hot shooting hand of Daemen early on in the game as the Wildcats shot 50-percent from long range hitting nine first half three-pointers. The shooting performance gave the Wildcats a 44-32 lead at the half.

Roberts Wesleyan had a lot of ground to make up late in the game as they headed into the fourth quarter down by 14 points. Lucy Covley's back-to-back three-pointers with 7:28 remaining cut the lead to single digits, making the score 61-70. Covley then hit another deep range shot with 5:15 left on the clock to bring the Redhawks within seven points, but Daemen answered with a three-pointer of their own to extend the lead back to ten.

With 1:23 remaining a three-pointer by Miller brought the Redhawks within five points, but the Wildcats were able to capitalize on 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to hold the lead and come out with the 88-80 victory.

Freshman Taya Andrews led Roberts with 23 points that included five three-pointers. Covley finished with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from long range and nine rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan (10-8, 4-4 ECC) will have a week off until they host Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, January 25 in the Voller Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
