Women's Basketball Soars Over Spartans

Rochester, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team won an important East Coast Conference matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday night, 80-75. The win keeps the Redhawks right on the heels of the Spartans in ECC standings.

Freshman forward, Emily Miller was one rebound shy of a double-double scoring 21 points and pulling down nine rebounds. The Buffalo, N.Y. native also had three blocks and two steals.

The Redhawks began the game with a 7-0 run but were not able to extend the lead any further as the Spartans climbed right back into the game. A strong second quarter began to give Roberts breathing room as a Miller buzzer beating three-pointer gave the Redhawks a 14 point lead heading into the second half.

In the third quarter Roberts found themselves holding a 54-37 lead, the largest of the game with just under eight minutes to go. But St. Thomas Aquinas hung around and used a 14-1 run late in the fourth quarter to draw within three points of the lead. Roberts never surrendered the lead and was able to carry the lead into the final whistle.

"I thought we played very unselfishly tonight," head coach Gary Andrews said. "We found the open player time and time again. I was proud of our effort."

The Spartans were led by Jenna Erickson who finished with 27 points and five assists.

Lucy Covley added 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting with five three pointers for the Redhawks to go along with five assists and seven rebounds.

As a team Roberts was 26-of-64 (40.6%) from the field and was 13-of-35 (37.1%) from long range.

Roberts Wesleyan (11-8, 5-4 ECC) travels to take on Molloy College on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m.
