Redhawks Fall in Overtime Thriller to Thruway Rival Daemen

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The men's soccer thruway rivalry game provided a wild finish Wednesday night as Roberts Wesleyan fell in overtime to Daemen College, 2-1.

The Redhawks were the first on the board with a goal in the 29th minute. Senior defender Scott Carson skied above the Wildcats defense to head home a corner kick taken by Daniel Maxwell. The goal was Carson's first of the season. The 1-0 lead stood until the 80th minute in the second half when Daemen freshman Noah Keem tied the game off a tap in rebounded shot. Fellow freshman Anthony Cupello took the initial shot that made for a difficult save by Redhawks' starting goalkeeper John Ciavaglia. Keem was in right place at the right time to even things up for Daemen.

In overtime the Redhawks nearly came away with the victory on two different occasions. In the 92nd minute senior Alex Loete headed a cross by freshman midfielder Marko Mitrevski  into the bottom right corner of the goal. But the linesman had raised his flag to indicate offside which nullified the goal. A corner kick in the 96th minute led to a free ball in the box that was headed by Mitrevski. Daemen goalkeeper Mike D'Amato came away with a diving save on the line to keep the Wildcats alive. Just over three minutes later Daemen ended the game when Sander Johannessen's shot from 18 yards out beat Ciavaglia to the bottom right corner of the net. The goal was assisted on by Nik Bohlin Ringdahl.

Ciavaglia had four saves in the game and the Redhawks' offense fired off 16 shots with seven on net.

The loss drops Roberts to 3-8 on the season and 1-3 in the East Coast Conference. On Saturday the Redhawks host Saint Thomas Aquinas at 3:30 p.m.
