ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a convincing 104-65 win over Nyack College in the East Region Tip Off hosted by Roberts.
Sophomore guard Taya Andrews poured in 20 points to lead the Redhawks in the blowout victory while fellow sophomore Emily Miller added a double-double to begin the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lucy Covley began the season with her usual three point shooting ways, going 6-of-10 from downtown for 18 points in the game. Covley now sits just 10 made three pointers short of the East Coast Conference record for career three pointers. The record currently stands at 288.
The Redhawks had a fantastic day shooting going 36-of-66 (54.5%) from the field including 13-of-23 (56.5%) from three point range.
Roberts took control of the game from the start grabbing a double digit lead just seven minutes into the first quarter. Andrews scored the first seven points for the Redhawks and had 12 of her 20 points in the first quarter alone. At the end of the first Roberts held a 26-13 advantage.
By halftime the Redhawks were able to more than double their lead with a 28 point margin. Defensively Roberts hounded the Warriors, forcing 11 first half turnovers and allowing just 13 points in each of the first two quarters. Sophomore Sara Nady came away with three steals in the game.
The Redhawks continued to shoot well from the field in the second half. The red-and-black were 7-of-11 (63.6%) from beyond the three point arc.
Leading the way for Nyack was sophomore forward Jocelin Wright who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Roberts Wesleyan (1-0) will take on American International on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second day of the East Region Tip-Off.
