Women's Basketball Falls to American International, 66-52

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It was a rough shooting day for the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team on Saturday as they fell to American International 66-52 in the second day of the East Region Tip-Off.

Neither team shot well in the game but the Redhawks fared worse than the visitors going 17-of-53 (32%) from the field including just 3-of-19 (15%) from three point range. American International, the No. 9 ranked team in the East Region was 24-of-59 (40%) from the field. The Yellow Jackets also hit seven three pointers.

Sophomore Emily Miller led the way for Roberts with 11 points and five rebounds. The Buffalo, N.Y. native also came away with four steals and four assists.

The only lead the Redhawks held in the game was at the end of the first quarter when a layup by Miller gave Roberts an 11-10 advantage. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead right away in the second quarter and didn't look back from there. AIC used a 15-2 run in the second period to gain a 12 point lead with six minutes remaining until halftime.

In the third quarter the Redhawks fought their way back cutting an 18 point deficit down to six by the end of the quarter. The lead was cut to just four points in the fourth quarter with 7:18 remaining following a layup by sophomore Tashayla Sutorius, but AIC's junior forward Dana Watts answered with five of her 21 points to keep the Yellow Jackets in control. Watts also had 11 rebounds on the day to post a double-double.

The Redhawks (1-1) will host Virginia Union next Friday at 6 p.m. in the Voller Athletic Center for part of the Redhawks Alumni Classic. Virginia Union is currently ranked No. 2 in the country after a trip to the NCAA National Championships last season where they fell to Ashland. The Redhawks will also take on Lake Erie College in the second day of the classic.
