Redhawks Fall to No. 2 Virginia Union

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to No. 2 Virginia Union on Friday night, 95-82 in the first game of the Redhawks Alumni Classic.

Four players scored in double digits for the Redhawks with Emily Miller, Taya Andrews and Necedah James all scoring 18 points each. Lucy Covley added 11 points.

It was a tale of two halves for the Redhawks who at the end of the first quarter held a seven point lead. Roberts then extended the lead to 11 points midway through the second quarter with the score 29-18. Virginia Union made their comeback and tied the score at 31-31 with 2:32 left in the first half. The Panthers were led by the hot shooting hand of Rachael Pecota who finished with a game-high 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting including 7-of-9 from three point range. At the half Virginia Union held a 39-38 lead.

In the second half the Redhawks started off ice cold getting outscored in the third quarter 30-11 to give the Panthers a 20 point lead heading into the final period of play. In the second half Roberts was only 12-of-38 (31%) from the field while hitting just 3-of-14 (21%) from long range.

Roberts was able to cut a 25 point lead down to as little as nine with less than a minute to go but it was too little, too late with the Panthers connecting on their free throws down the stretch.

Miller led the Redhawks in rebound with eight on the night to go along with her 18 points.

Covley hit three triples in the game to close in on the East Coast Conference All-Time record for three pointers in a career. She is currently seven shy of breaking the record of 288 three pointers.

Next up for Roberts is Lake Erie for both teams second game of the Redhawks Alumni Classic. The game is slated to begin at noon on Saturday.
