ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team was on fire from three point range in Sunday's home game against Chestnut Hill, connecting on 12-of-22 from beyond the arc to pick up an 80-68 win. The Redhawks have now won five straight to start the season.
Senior
Manny Joseph was 3-of-3 from long range and finished the contest with a team high 15 points. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native also had four rebounds and one assist. Four other Redhawks hit at least two shots from beyond the arc to give the offense the spark it needed to keep a lead over the Griffins.
Much like in Saturday's game, Roberts grabbed the lead early in the game and never relinquished it to the visitors. The Redhawks took a tie ball game and quickly made it a nine point lead in their favor with their three point shooting success. With the score knotted at 11-11 in the first half Roberts hit three long range shots on four trips down the floor. Joseph hit one in that span, while junior
Justin Vaughan hit two.
The Griffins hung around despite the excellent shooting from the Redhawks and only saw a four point deficit at the halftime break, 36-32. Chestnut Hill received most of its production from guard Cartier Talford. The junior finished the game with 28 points to pace Chestnut Hill.
In the second half Roberts saw its lead swell to as many as 14 points, but Chestnut Hill was able to hold on and cut the lead to six points. The Redhawks managed to fend off any sort of comeback attempt and a statement breakaway dunk by junior
Brad Williams brought the lead back to double digits for Roberts to all by secure them the victory.
Point guard
Michael Bush was the second leading scorer for Roberts with 14 points. The junior also had five rebounds and three assists.
The Redhawks got much more production off the bench than the Griffins, outscoring the visitors 26-8 in bench points.
Roberts Wesleyan (5-0) is one of two undefeated teams in the East Coast Conference in the early season. Bridgeport is currently unbeaten at 4-0. No teams have played any conference matchups yet. The Redhawks will take on Nyack College on Saturday in the Voller Athletic Center for a 2 p.m. game. Roberts has already defeated Nyack once this season when they played in part of the ECC-CACC Challenge. The Redhawks won 67-60.
