BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Isaiah Lewis scored a career high 26 points to lead the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team to an 85-82 upset over nationally ranked Bridgeport on Saturday night at Hubbell Gym. Bridgeport was ranked No. 1 in the recent D2SIDA East Region Poll and No. 19 in the D2SIDA National Poll.
 
The Redhawks handed the Purple Knights just their second loss of the season and first loss in the East Coast Conference while also holding the hosts to their second lowest point total of the season. Bridgeport came into Saturday's game averaging 96.5 points per game. Roberts is only allowing opponents to average 72.9 points per game this season.
 
Four different players scored in double digits for the Redhawks on what was a very efficient shooting night for the team. Roberts shot over 55-percent from the field on 30-of-54 shooting. Despite 28 total turnovers against an athletic and quick Bridgeport full court press the Redhawks found ways to attack the pressure and get easy baskets on the offensive end. Bridgeport shot nearly 44-percent from the field in the first half but struggled on the offensive side of the court in the second half shooting under 39-percent.
 
The Redhawks trailed by seven points five minutes into the second half but was able to retake the lead with 9:13 left in the game. With the lead in hand late in the game the Redhawks gave the Purple Knights plenty of opportunities to either tie the game or take the lead but the home team was unable to find a way to score.
 
With the score knotted at 82-82 with :51 seconds remaining Lewis' pass went out of bounds giving possession to Bridgeport. On the ensuing inbounds pass Lewis got a steal leading to a foul on Manny Joseph. The senior knocked down both free throws to take a two point lead with :41 seconds remaining. The Purple Knights missed a pair of layups on their end of the court before the Redhawks' Brad Williams came down with the rebound. Williams missed both free throws giving Bridgeport an opportunity to tie the game with nine seconds in the game. On the next possession Joseph got a steal and also missed two free throws after being fouled. Bridgeport sophomore Bakary Camara came down with the rebound and called a timeout without any remaining for the team leading to a technical foul. Lewis hit one of two foul shots to take a three point lead with four seconds remaining. The Purple Knights got a final second shot of but missed the mark.
 
Camara and Eric Rankin were the leading scorers for Bridgeport with 19 points apiece.
 
Joining Lewis' double digit scoring effort for the Redhawks was Michael Bush with 18 points, Joseph with 15 and Jean Toussaint with 14 points. Williams posted 10 rebounds to lead Roberts in that category.
 
Roberts Wesleyan (9-3, 2-1 ECC) will play Mercy College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Nyack College.
