ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In its first East Coast Conference game of the season the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team came away with a hard-fought 76-68 win over the University of the District of Columbia on Friday night.
Five players scored in double figures for the Redhawks with junior
Jean Toussaint leading the way with 16 points.
Neither team was able to pull ahead in the game as there were eight lead changes in the first half alone leading to a 37-37 tie at the half. Sophomore
Isaiah Lewis scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half on 4-of-4 shooting from three point range.
In the second half the Firebirds jumped out to the lead after two three point baskets by junior Danny Shand. The guard finished the game with 17 points. The Redhawks regained the lead at the 16:24 mark following a layup and free throw by
Manny Joseph. Roberts maintained the lead for over 10 minutes but a three pointer by UDC's Kevin Cox gave the Firebirds a 62-60 lead with just over five minutes to play. The lead would again change hands for the 14
th time in the game, but it would be the last as the Redhawks retook the lead for good with 1:40 left on the clock. Toussaint was impactful down the stretch helping the Redhawks close out the game. The 6-foot-7 forward scored seven points in the final two minutes of play. Toussaint was 5-of-6 from the free throw line while also pulling down two crucial rebounds and adding a steal.
The Redhawks shot well on the night shooting over 44-percent from the field and just under 44-percent from three point range. The Firebirds were 15-of-32 (46.8%) from the field in the first half, but Roberts defense held the visitors to just a 9-of-29 (31%) performance in the second half.
Roberts Wesleyan moves to 8-2 on the season and 1-0 in the East Coast Conference. The Redhawks will face a tough test in Sunday's upcoming game as they take on ECC preseason favorite Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Spartans are 8-3 (1-0 ECC) and are coming off a ten point win at Daemen on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Voller Athletic Center.
