Valhalla, N.Y. – Freshman
Emily Miller's double-double along with junior Brooke Field's game-leading 24 points helped pace the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team to a 75-70 win over Mercy College on Tuesday evening.
Â
Miller scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the game while adding in three assists and two blocks. Fields finished with 24 points and three rebounds.
Â
Despite a tough shooting night going just 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the field, the Redhawks were able to sneak away with a much needed East Coast Conference victory to keep them locked into the fourth place position amongst the conference.
Â
"I was proud of our girls' composure on the road even when we weren't shooting well from the field," said head coach
Gary Andrews. "We were able to hit on our free throws which was huge."
Â
Free throws played a big part in the win for Roberts as the team connected on 15-of-17 (88.2%) throughout the game.
Â
Both teams battled with the lead changing hands eight times during the game while the score was all knotted up on five different occasions. The Redhawks built a nine point lead in the second quarter, which was the largest lead of the game, with 4:46 left on the clock before halftime. Mercy was quickly able to diminish that lead and tie the game at 30 with just under two minutes remaining in the half. A three pointer by Fields at the end of the half gave the Redhawks a 35-32 advantage at the break.
Â
In the second half the Mavericks only held the lead once, but the score remained close. Roberts held a one point lead late in the game with just over two minutes left on the clock. Back-to-back layups by the Redhawks extended the lead to five points forcing Mercy to foul with under 30 seconds to play. The Redhawks sealed the game going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Â
Roberts Wesleyan (15-10, 9-6 ECC) will travel to face NYIT on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a pivotal game against the Bears who currently sit right behind the Redhawks in the ECC at 14-9 overall and 8-7 in conference action.
