Women's Basketball Gets Crucial Win at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Freshman Taya Andrews posted a double-double on Saturday to lead the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team to a pivotal East Coast Conference win over NYIT, 88-85.

Andrews scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds along with two assists to help bring home the victory for the Redhawks who currently sit in a three way tie in the loss column for second place overall in the ECC. Both Molloy and St. Thomas Aquinas are the other teams who sit alongside the Redhawks.

In a closely contested game throughout free throw shooting became an important advantage and the Redhawks success at the line was a major factor in pulling out the win. As a team, Roberts shot 18-of-19 (94.7%) from the charity stripe with the Redhawks going 9-for-9 in the fourth quarter to help control the lead until the final whistle.

Roberts played from behind for the majority of the first half, fighting off a 10 point NYIT lead in the first quarter to keep the deficit within reach. With 8:39 remaining in the third quarter Emily Miller's three pointer put the Redhawks on top and they would hold the lead for the rest of the game despite the Bears staying within a one to two possession range.

NYIT had an attempt to tie the game at 88 in the last second but Miller came up with a block.

The Redhawks were 30-of-64 (46.9%) from the field and shot over 47-percent from three point range.

Lucy Covley (19), Brooke Fields (15) and Necedah James (11) joined Andrews scoring in double digits.

Roberts Wesleyan (16-10, 10-6 ECC) will play their final regular season road game of the season against Bridgeport on Monday. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
