Rochester, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to No. 18 Queens College on Wednesday, 72-63.
Â
The Redhawks had to fight off double digit deficits multiple times throughout the game to stay within reach of the East Coast Conference leading Knights. Roberts found themselves down 14 heading into the fourth quarter, 55-41. But a 15-4 run got the Redhawks back into the game, only down three with 4:12 remaining in the game. A three pointer by
Lucy Covley with 2:47 left cut the lead to two points, but that is the closest the Redhawks would get as the Knights ran away with the game in the last two minutes building an 11 point lead with just 15 seconds left in the contest.
Â
"I was proud of our effort," head coach
Gary Andrews said. "A couple more of those layups or open shots go in and we could have pulled the upset. Queens is a tough team and we battled with them tonight."
Â
Roberts struggled on the glass getting outrebounded 47-32, giving up 17 offensive rebounds leading to 22 second chance points for the Knights.
Â
Freshman
Taya Andrews led the scoring effort for the Redhawks with 18 points and added seven rebounds.
Â
On the visitor's side, Madison Rowland posted a double-double with 21 points and 18 rebounds, adding in seven assists and five steals.
Â
Roberts Wesleyan (13-10, 7-6 ECC) are back in action on Saturday when they host LIU Post at 1 p.m.
