Women's Basketball Stopped by NYIT in ECC Tournament Play

Rochester, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team couldn't advance in the East Coast Conference Championships after falling to NYIT on Wednesday night, 80-69.

In a game where the Redhawks played from behind the entirety of the match, NYIT consistently came up with an answer to stop any Redhawk offensive run. Roberts was never able to overtake the lead despite cutting double-digit leads to one or two possession games on multiple occasions.

NYIT set the tone right out of the gate with a 13-2 run that took the Redhawks out of rhythm to begin the game. Roberts found themselves down by 17 late in first quarter giving the Bears their largest lead of the game. The Red-and-Black cut the lead to 25-21 with 7:39 remaining in the second quarter, but the Bears extended the lead to eight before the end of the half.

In the fourth quarter NYIT held a 12 point advantage that the Redhawks cut to just three with over three minutes to play in the game but again the Bears had the answer with a 10-2 run that would finish the game out and move them on to face No. 1 Queens in the ECC Semifinals.

The usual three-point shooting ability of the Redhawks wasn't put on display as the team shot just 7-of-32 (21.9%) from beyond the arc. The shooting woes also appeared at the free throw line from a team that was ranked No.1 in the country in the category. Roberts shot just 8-of-14 (57.1%) from the line despite coming into the game with a team average of over 82-percent.

Freshman Emily Miller finished with a double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds while also adding three blocks and two assists. Fellow freshman Taya Andrews totaled 20 points with eight rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan (17-12) will play in the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament with the first round of games taking place on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11.
