WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Freshman
Emily Miller scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the No. 1 seeded Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team to a dominating 108-63 win over No. 8 Crowley's Ridge College in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships.
Â
The Redhawks' 108 point outburst was just seven points shy of the NCCAA Division I all-time single game tournament record for most points scored. The record of 115 was set by Lee University in 1989 against Northwestern. Roberts also fell just one triple shy of the tournament's single-game record for most three pointers in a game. The Redhawks hit 16 long-range shots. The record of 17 in a game was set in 2014 by Union University.
Â
Miller did the majority of her work in the first half to help the Redhawks build a comfortable lead over the Pioneers, scoring 11 of her 19 points and pulling down seven of her 10 rebounds. But while Miller led the team in the points column, five other Redhawks scored in double digits.
Â
Senior
Kindsay Brandt came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting including four three pointers. The guard was also 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Â
Junior sharpshooter
Lucy Covley went into the game just one three pointer short of the East Coast Conference record for most three pointers in a season, which stood at 97. Â Covley overtook that record after going 3-of-8 from downtown to give her 100 three pointers on the season.
Â
"I was pleased with our ball movement and our unselfishness," head coach
Gary Andrews said. "I thought we played hard and played together."
Â
Ball movement was a key component in the game to give the Redhawks open shots on offense as they shot over 48-percent from the field. Roberts also found success at the line as they have all season connecting on 14-of-15 (93.3-percent) from the charity stripe.
Â
Roberts Wesleyan improves to 20-12 on the season and will face No. 4 seeded Greenville on Thursday at 7 p.m. Â
