WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team's run at defending their National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship ended on Thursday evening as the Redhawks fell to Greenville College, 78-72.
Freshman
Taya Andrews scored 24 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Redhawks.
Midway through the third quarter Roberts had built a double digit lead and held the momentum after three straight baskets from Andrews. But the momentum switched sides just over a minute later when Greenville used a 12-0 run to take the lead 48-45 with 2:29 remaining in the quarter.
The Panthers held the lead the majority of the fourth quarter, but a three pointer by Andrews with 3:18 left in the game gave the Redhawks a 66-65 lead. It was the only time the No. 1 seeded Roberts had the lead in the final period of play as Greenville regained the advantage on the next possession. The No. 4 seeded Panthers then used an 8-0 run to extend the lead, making the score 73-66. Andrews hit another three pointer with 41 seconds to go making the score 73-69, but it was too little too late as the Panthers carried the lead to the final whistle.
Emily Miller finished the game with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block.
Roberts Wesleyan will play in the third place game on Saturday against No. 2 seed Mid-America Christian University. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. tip off.
